Working together to promote sustainable living within our wonderful village of Witham Friary

WELCOME

SUSTAINABLE WITHAM FRIARY

Postwoods.jpg

Our aim is to promote ideas
on how Witham Friary villagers can individually and as a community achieve zero

carbon emissions by 2030, increase biodiversity and wildlife in the village and work cooperatively to help the village become more sustainable.

Sustainable Witham Friary is a group of friendly people working together to promote sustainable living within our wonderful village of Witham Friary and to ensure that sustainability is at the heart of future planning for the village. We organise events and share information, we liaise with other groups within the village and with other villages in the parish.

Sustainable Witham was set up in 2019 as a response to the climate and ecological emergency.  Our main aim is to share information on practical ways that we, both as a village and as individual villagers, can do our bit to ensure a positive impact on our environment.  None of us can save the planet on our own, but Sustainable Witham feels strongly that individual efforts matter.  We are looking for realistic ways we can cut our own carbon footprint, decrease our use of plastic and live more sustainably, increasing biodiversity and doing what we can to encourage wildlife in the village. We also wish to support Mendip District Council’s climate emergency plan to take care of the environment, leaving it in a good condition for generations to come and lead the way for Mendip to be carbon neutral by 2030.

Witham Friary is a small village in the east of Somerset, between the towns of Frome and Bruton and close to the borders of both Wiltshire and Dorset. With a population of around 300, the village boasts several dairy farms, which have been in the same families for generations.

At the heart of the village are the church, the village hall and the pub, The Seymour Arms, a timeless Somerset cider house built in 1866 by the Duke of Somerset and run by the Douel family since 1943. There are several village clubs and societies, such as the History Society, the Cricket Club and the Conker Committee. The latter organises charitable fundraising events based at the pub, for example, the Conker Championships and the Duck Race.

For more information about the village, see the village website or follow the Facebook page.
